Wiltshire College exhibition:
Urban Signatures

Preview 6 – 9pm Tuesday 29th May 2012

29 May – 1 June 2012 10am till 4pm

1st June 10 till 3

No Limits – defined within itself, from itself – the city. This contemporary art exhibition shows journeys of exploration and examines the diversity, extremes, the unknown territories and transience of the urban environment.

Second year and part time students studying for a Foundation Degree in Applied Art and Design at Wiltshire College, Trowbridge share their creative interpretations as they consider the dichotomy of the city in all its guises.

Investigations have been made using a variety of materials and media – painting, print, photography, video, and 3d. The work produced seeks to change our perception and reveal something new, engaging with the endless current/flow of our imagination.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but having new eyes”
Marcel Proust

Come to the Private view from 6pm on Tuesday 29th May to meet the artists and discuss their work…

“Although my work, in part, has been inspired by the thoughts generated by walking. It is the links between our being in the now, and the associations of a location connected with our past and future that interests me. The materiality of the surface upon which we walk is the final component” Davina Kemble

“Objects document our evolution towards urbanisation. In my paintings, their provenance gives way to their placement and shape” Jackie Sharp

“The theme of my work is based on pattern and repetition. I see pattern as a metaphor for life. We have a human need to find order, we find pattern in random arrangements. Other elements in my work are the placement of the pattern I am working with, the form the repetition takes, and the spaces that emerge” Liz Harding

“My work expresses the power and energy of the urban environment with the use of mark making and brush strokes. I use photographs taken of industrial buildings which portray a sense of dynamism and use them as a basis for works on canvas and in print. By building up the work in layers and expressing energy through the use of line I reflect the strength and force of the urban environment” Judith Beeby

“My work this year has taken me from intervention to ambiguity through the use of mark making in drawing and painting” Laura Norris

“Portraiture appropriation in the context of urban” Martine Landry

“I explored various different medias in an attempt to determine whether it was possible to encourage the audience to recall their own memories or experiences, and to establish whether still or moving imagery was more effective” Trudi Bull

“Inspiring decay, led to investigation into painting as a three- dimensional object, producing works of colour, form and question” Wayne Elkins
