Shirley Collins: America over the Water

Sunday 12th July

Doors at 7pm // Performance from 7:30pm

Folk legend Shirley Collins and song-hunter Alan Lomax tour America’s Deep South in a Buick, taping the music of country folk, churches, chain gangs and voodoo, discovering the great bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell on their way. Their field recordings feature in the George Clooney film Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

Shirley’s memoir America Over The Water cuts her Southern journey with touching tales of growing up in wartime Hastings. Readings and more by Shirley, with actor Pip Barnes, and pictures and recordings from the trip.
